Description

Prassi peatland is located in the southern part of Hiiu county, 1.5 km west of Käina-Emmaste road. The peat formed by terrestrialisation in shallow lake, feeds on precipitation and groundwater. Water recipient is Prassi stream. Peat lies on loam. Prassi is a wooded mire, area of 170 ha, of which 81 ha is a peat deposit; 0.23 million tons of peat is an active well decomposed peat reserve (Orru, 1995). There are 158 ha eutrophic and 12 ha oligotrophic peat layers. Thickness of the eutrophic peat layer is 1.40 m, ash content is 9.7%, moisture content is 87% and degree of peat decomposition is 42 %. The oligotrophic peat consists of moderately and slightly decomposed (22%) Sphagnum peat with a thickness of 1.60 m, ash content of 4.6% and moisture content of 92% (Allikvee et al., 1972; Orru et al., 1988). It is recommended to leave the peatland in its current state (Orru et al., 1988). It does not belongs in the Ministry of the Environment list of peatlands suitable for peat extraction (Regulation no.87; 27.12.2016).
