Description

Peatland is located in the central part of Hiiu county, 15 km southwest of the city of Kärdla, between the dunes. The Käina-Hüti road remains in its southern part. The peatland formed by paludification, feeds on precipitation and groundwater, the water recipient is Armioja. Fen woodland and wooded bog spread in the Hermistu bog. The area of the peatland is 208 ha, of which 81 ha is a peat deposit (Orru, 1995). Dominates the oligotrophic peat  in the Hermistu bog, where the upper layers consists of slightly decomposed (18%) heather-Sphagnum peat. The middle layers are moderately decomposed (28%) S. fuscum and heather Sphagnum peat. The lower layers are Sphagnum and reed peat. The thickness of the deposit is 1.60 m, ash content is 3%, moisture content  is 91% (Allikvee et al., 1972). The peat reserves  are 0.17 million tons  of which 0.14 million tons are well decomposed peat and 0.03 million tons slightly decomposed peat. It is recommended to leave the bog  in a natural state. It does not belong in the Ministry of the Environment list of peatlands suitable for peat extraction (Regulation no. 87; 27.12.2016).
